Ductless heat pumps are universally popular in Europe and Asia, with a decades-long track record for quality and high performance and are growing rapidly in North America. The technology is ideal for heating and cooling in our temperate Pacific Northwest climate, and electric utilities throughout the Northwest are eager for their customers to install ductless systems to reduce demand on the grid.
A ductless heat pump is a highly efficient zoned heating and cooling system that does not require a central duct system. Ductless systems consist of an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air-moving units, connected by a set of refrigerant lines. Indoor units are typically mounted high on a wall, covering a 3-inch hole where the refrigerant line passes through from the outside unit, which is usually installed on a pad at ground level. Each indoor unit serves a heating and cooling zone that can be controlled independently.
There are a variety of alternative indoor units available if the typical high-wall unit doesn’t work for your space. Designer models such as the Daikin Emura™ provide cleaner lines with a curved design. Floor-mount units are a modern take on the traditional heating register and can be disguised with a custom cabinet if desired. Ceiling cassettes and concealed air handler units hide the mechanical components out of sight.
